The 10 Best Local Sandwich Shops in Your Foothill Community:
Not just an artisanal cheese shop, the cheese cave also carries tons of gorgeous groceries like raw goat’s milk, handmade pastas, sauces, and lots of chocolates. But the sandwiches they make daily are probably my favorite thing. The source baguette from the best in the business- Creme Bakery! Then they have two types of sandwich they make for the day, usually one with meat and one without. There’s no substitutions, and there’s no wait because they’re pre-made. Grab & go at its finest! You get to choose a side to go with them, either cornichon or corn nuts! I usually make my date order the side I don’t get so we can share because they are SO GOOD.
Yes, the place with the best breakfast pastries. Yes, they make the best croissants, bread and baguette in the game. And yes, they make them into sandwiches. Classic French style sandwiches- like butter, brie & ham with pickles. Each ingredient is of the best quality, making the whole better than the sum of its parts. They are quite magical. And you won’t regret picking up a cookie while you’re there.
They don’t do onions. Like, not at all. But what they do is a fan-f*%cking-tastic Italian sub sandwich. And meatball subs. And they also serve hot Italian food that is excellent! Plus they also sell it frozen for you to take home, heat up, and pretend you made it when you serve it to your family! Just me? haha. This is the sandwich I ordered right after giving birth to my daughter- I had been unable to eat processed meats for 9 months and I was not about to waste time eating hospital food! My sister-in-law snuck it into the hospital for me!
Claro’s Italian Market & Deli in Upland
Another gem in the Italian deli/grocery combo world. We catered many of our family parties with their sub sandwiches. They are consistent, delicious, and their menu has a ton of sandwich ideas I’ve never thought of! Plus the sandwich shop sits inside of a good size italian grocery store with all kinds of obscure pasta sauce brands, beans, dried pastas, frozen foods and more. Hot tip: DO NOT go home without treating yourself to some cookies. Their on-site bakery is excellent! You won’t regret it.
If fried chicken sandwiches could talk, they would ALL be jealous of this one. Honeybird has perfected it. Whether you get the classic or the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich, neither will let you down. The breading on the chicken is perfectly crispy and delicate, the bread is soft and scrumptious, and the sauces are downright heavenly. If you’re craving fried chicken don’t even mess with anything else. And grab a slice of pie on your way out- they should not be missed!
Tucked away in an unassuming strip mall on Grand, this is a true diamond in the rough. Joana has brought the best of Poland with her into this shop. They make hot foods, sandwiches, bakery items and have a frozen case of take home foods too! Plus a great selection of European groceries, chocolates and other treats! Try the Bigos or the stuffed cabbage if you’re in the mood for food food, but if it’s a sandwich you crave we couldn’t recommend the 1/2 & 1/2 special- corned beef & pastrami.
Oktoberfest is not the only time to be frequenting this local German haunt. They have a bakery as well as a deli and BOY does that make for a good combo. The bread on the sandwiches is delightful, and their meat case carries a wide selection of the German greatest hits: bratwurst, bockwurst, sauerkraut, and don’t deny yourself the delightful German potato salad. Your potlucks will never be the same!
Old World Delicatessen in Upland & Covina
This long-standing family owned establishment has old world italian food at its roots. The grinder, meatball sub, and salami and cheese sandwiches are a testament to it. Plus the hot foods they serve are deliciously italian too- lasagna, eggplant parmesan, even pizza! They also serve hot dogs, roasted chicken, soups and salads too. This is a great family restaurant.
The play on words doesn’t end at the name of the shop- the panini are appropriately and very creatively named as well! Want to try the Coven, or are you more in the mood for Dragon’s Breath? Both are delicious! I especially love the abundance of vegetarian options! The Broomstick and the Killer Tomato are my top two choices of veggie options. Don’t skip lunch again when you’ve got this as an option!
Gandalfo’s in Rancho Cucamonga
A true New York deli in the middle of Rancho Cucamonga. A dream come true if you’ve ever fallen in love with lox & bagels or a reuben in the big city! Any NYC craving can be tamed at this fantastic sandwich shop. Even Nathan’s Hot Dogs! They also have a kids meal special for $6 which you know I love. They also serve salads, box lunches, breakfast sandwiches, and tons of bread choices (or even a wrap)!
